Joff Smith announces for State Representative
WORCESTER - Joffrey A. Smith has announced that he is running as a Democratic candidate for the 13th Worcester District seat in the state House of Representatives. The 29-year-old who won a 3rd term in November as the District 1 Worcester City Councilor lives at 37 Barry Rd. in Worcester. Mr. Smith is the Founder and President of Joffrey Smith Financial Group in Worcester, a financial services company working in the areas of insurance and retirement planning, investments, and employee benefits.
Mr. Smith is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Hartford where he received a B.S. in Business Administration majoring in Economics and Finance. He is also a graduate of Doherty Memorial High School.
Smith cited job creation, education, government reform, preserving the current level of local aid and Chapter 70 education funding for communities, and helping small businesses by reducing health care costs as his top issues.
“In these current challenging fiscal times individuals, families and businesses are facing unprecedented financial hardships along with the Commonwealth and nation. Too many people find themselves struggling to find a job, facing foreclosure, or needing assistance with rising health insurance costs. I will be there to provide leadership through this crisis and be responsive to the needs of both Worcester and Paxton.”
Locally and statewide, Smith said the state must make job creation its top priority. Mr. Smith said, “I will work to fund programs to support emerging industries like biotechnology and green energy in Worcester.”
Mr. Smith said, “I am proud to have graduated from the Worcester Public Schools.” He attended West Tatnuck and Flagg St. Elementary schools and Forest Grove Junior High. Smith said, “He will support education funding as a top priority.” He believes, “It is essential that everyone have access to a quality education.”
Smith said, “As a City Councilor, I know the challenges that cities and towns face and their reliance on state funding. That is why I support level funding of local aid to keep core services in place.”
Mr. Smith believes that small businesses are vital to the economy by creating jobs and spurring economic growth. “The exorbitant increases in health care costs are a significant barrier to economic growth. This is taking away money that small businesses could use to hire more workers, fund capital expenditures, and make other investments that strengthen our economy.” Smith supports legislation to help small businesses that would require both health care providers and insurers to limit their costs.
The district consists of precincts 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Ward 1, and Ward 9 on the West side of Worcester along with precinct 3 of Ward 10, and the town of Paxton.
